Basic Info
Name:Ernie Macmillan
Bio
Name: Ernest (Ernie) Emyrs-Uther Macmillan

Birthdate: January 1, 1980

House: Hufflepuff

Appearance: (Book Two, at least, describes Ernie as stout and pudgy-handed. See background). At present Ernie is tall – not as tall as some of the more well-known folk of stretching height, but not in anyway a shrimp. He is roughly five foot nine inches, give or take perhaps an inch, and somewhat lean. Not tank, and he is not gangly or stick-thin, Ernie is fairly in shape, but he still is somewhat pudgy, especially at his abdomen and with flabby arms and legs. Not so much flabby, really, as still somewhat large, at least larger than he’d like.

His hair is a brown color – not a light brown, but not very, very dark. It is thick with a slight curl in the textured style, irritating only in the first morning combing. It is, really, a dark chestnut; at the front especially though scattered naturally throughout, are strands (or some few strands grouping together also) of lighter brown, notably lighter, almost as if streaks. His eyes are hazel, with more brown than green. His flesh is a healthy peach, and if not for the effort towards being a healthier sort of person, he would burn terribly in the sun. As it is, a layer of wizard lotion keeps him from it, but he doesn’t really tan.

He acquired a scar from an exploding potion in fourth year, but it happened behind him and marks generally the back of his. He has been toying, playing at facial hair, but can’t really stand the itching and the period between something nice and nothing where he just looks scruffy, so he leaves himself smooth faced. On his face are worry lines, not yet very evident but reaching such a state– not so much wrinkles, and they aren’t so to make him look awfully older than he ought to, but it has lended to his having a somewhat ‘old’ face. He likes to think it makes him look wise, and lends to potential ‘authority.’ His posture isn’t perfect, from so many heavy bags of books and so much slouching over said texts, but when formal or making a point, or Prefecting, he sticks his chest out and stands very straight backed. It doesn’t do to slouch when being an authority.

Ernie doesn’t really care much for fashion, but he does at least know what would be awfully clashing. Fortunately, school uniforms keep him from too much stress over clothing. He prefers comfortable but decent clothing, nothing too baggy or unkempt. His shoes of choice are either loafers, those with laces, or tennis, neither particularly old nor new.

Hobbies: Ernie is an avid fan of books, typically books of all type – though at present, he still as a tendency to emphasize to people a love of informative, factual text books and the like, something done for the occasional opportunity to boast, but also because he does adore learning. He loves quidditch, being an avid fan if never a miraculous flier, and any team he supports he can become fanatic for. Also, chess, checkers, exploding snap, and a muggle game called monopoly that Justin Finch-Fletchy got him into – he enjoys that especially of the lot, though devoid of magic as it is. Ernie also collects things rapidly – whether it be books, muggle things, cards (he has an extensive chocolate frog collection, and Hannah’s added to it), etc, leaving hid trunk really very cluttered. He enjoys listening to music, not much at making it himself.

Wand Type: Ernie’s wand is of sturdy, well-polished oak, somewhat thick and certainly strong, with a pale yew handle. The core is dragon heart-string, and the wand itself is far from temperamental, suited for transfiguration and defensive kind of spell.

Background: Ernie was raised in a family that could trace itself as wizard for at least nine generations, if not more, back. His great, great grandmother on his father’s side was a pure-blood (the tenth daughter of eleven, the family could not afford to be too discriminatory in who she wed as long as she did marry), as was his great-grandfather on his mother’s side. Though the family was full-blooded, old and as respectable as possible without being pure-blooded, having been around for so long, Ernest was not very rich. His family was more middle-class, leaning toward upper-middle class, they were very comfortable. He was not raised to look down on muggles or anything of that kind, his family being open-minded and generally sensible, just, and if anything, vaguely curious about the muggles.

Ernie was an only child and somewhat spoiled. His father, Lance, was a beefy man himself, and worked in the Ministry. His mother, Serendipity, was (and is) something of a librarian/researcher for the Ministry, keeping track of records and the like, and looking further into others. Though he was an only child, Ernie had an abundance of cousins, and his family was close, with aunts and uncles and even distant relations often around. He was still spoiled, with his self-worth endlessly emphasized. His father was a very strict but respectable man, rules and order were godliness. The importance of a fair government and fair rules, the necessity, were impressed early on Ernie.

He showed magical talent very early, an obnoxious shriek for a forbidden pudding causing a window to shatter and the pudding to fly from the refrigerator. His parents were so thrilled with this show of magic, they managed to over look the broken window and the chocolate mess in the kitchen – though they stood by their decision of no pudding. He was taught some basics and various other things (even etiquette) from his mother, whom had been of the richer kind before marrying Lance. He began reading also early, avariciously. Childish games and the occasional outside activity suited him well. From parent expectation, and his own striving toward it, Ernie became something of a perfectionist in what he did or attempted to do – no matter the thing. This also resulted in his being a sore loser for a good time, until a good lecture and his own sensibility worked toward reversing that.

He and his family were thrilled but not surprised when his Hogwarts invitation arrived, and he pulled a Granger by at least skimming, if not memorizing his books before starting. Though it was sparked mainly from being bored and an actual keen desire to learn and cherish the volumes of pleasant knowledge, it was also to, on a level, be able to go around and –know- things, and speak them. While he did have a desire for knowledge and information, a part of it tied into his seeking for attention and admiration, and even their best interests (knowledge is helpful!!) he could speak somewhat boastingly, or at least pompously about what he knew, how much he knew. Understandably, this didn’t actually impress as many people as he had hoped it would, and he quieted a bit following notice of eye-rolling.

Ernie did make friends, though, as he was cheerful and generally friendly – if trying to hard for that early impressing, or generally baffled as to why they wouldn’t care about what he knew and enjoy/appreciate it as well. While it was the pompous addition also, Ernie generally was very, very interested in school and what he could learn, the many facts, and he would always have trouble understanding that others may not be as study/school/information keen, and that they may not want to know or be pleased to hear it. Being such a perfectionist, and with this, it is needless to say that his grades were very good. Very defensive and loyal to his friends, in second year with the attacks, he immediately suspected Harry Potter with many others – he would not have typically, except for what he interpreted as sure signs. He told anyone who would listen, and rather viciously, what he believed and that Harry was no good, especially after Justin turned up petrified. It just seemed so obvious, further, Harry would have a reason to be prejudiced what with his hating his Muggle family. Once Hermione also was realized as petrified, Ernie became swiftly aghast at his behavior and what he had said, his quick assumptions, and had sought Harry out immediately to apologize.

Ernie had a thoroughly interesting school period, always ripping easily through books in the library and heartily impressing on folk rules and information, sometimes just to hear himself talk in hopes of impressing them and sometimes because he felt he was really being helpful. It would be difficult to say he wasn’t a good friend, per say, of anyone in Hufflepuff, especially his year. He had had a slight tendency to gossip, yet once made Prefect in Fifth Year, he squashed that urge forcefully with the enormous determination to be a proper and excellent Prefect – he was very proud, and his perfectionist attitude had no bounds. He tended to ace most exams, doing very, very well on his OWLs despite the hell of the year, and very well on the NEWTs (even with the many NEWT classes he did end up taking).

Ernie supported Harry Potter in Fifth Year, though only loons had before that time. A little bit because he was still guilty of having been a prat to Harry in Second Year, but mostly because Ernie honestly believed him. After all, Cedric Diggory died, and it is hardly something for anyone to jest about. Ernie knew, trusted Harry to not be the type to lie about it, and had always seemed pretty right in the head.

On Weight Ernie was, to be blunt, fat. Described as being stout, with a pudgy hand (held out to Harry for shaking in book two), while a portion of this disappeared with the help of puberty and the fact it was baby fat, he still was easy prey for numerous taunts regarding weight from others, especially Slytherins, and though he was at least at front a pompous and not very discourage able person, it did get to him. He might have pretended it didn’t, and at first did not understand why it would be so awful, a thing like weight, but it did swiftly bother and hurt. Besides, what with becoming a Prefect and so becoming more fanatic about his grades, and joining Dumbledore’s Army, seeing the war rise and reading very thoroughly into the pamphlet on Aurors and the requirements he did seem able to meet, Ernie realized he would need to be in top physical shape to be anything like an effective Auror.

Beginning fifth year, Ernest Macmillan began an attempt at exercise and a somewhat healthy diet. After all, chocolate and treats had such an appeal, especially when one is trying not to eat them. Exercise was difficult at first, he was dreadfully out of shape and every fiber in his body protested, he couldn’t keep up anything of a run and so resorted first to walking. Eventually he could manage a jog, to lift weights for a period of time, to work toward something that magic had little answer for – but by the school year beginning of sixth, while he had certainly shed some pounds and become certainly fitter, the difference was not obvious – not as if it would have been if people had seen the gradual change.

Humiliated by the idea that people might realize he was ashamed of himself and not as proud and confident as he tended to act, he maintained a strict schedule of dawn (or earlier!) waking to jog the grounds, run, performs strenuous sit-ups and push ups – when he could, of course, becoming more adept and able to do more as time continued. He rooted for the Hufflepuff Quidditch Team until he was sore, but he had little talent in the sport, so there was no chance of using his exercise with that excuse.Ernie has slimmed some, but is still senstive about his weight and still working on becoming more fit. The combined efforts of a painstakingly healthy diet and exercise that is becoming as grueling as his body in whatever present condition it had been can take (thus steadily more so), not to mention the early on shed of baby fat, are helping.

Relationships: None so far.

Personality:
He is cheerful, bright in all degrees of the word, and friendly, if a bit picky in those whom he closely befriends. He will be at least polite to everyone, especially since becoming prefect as it would not do to be basely and crudely hostile and immature (IE SOME Slytherins, ahem). To the less outright hostile Slytherins he even attempts civility. He is, as described, an immense perfectionist. Once he acquires a hobby, takes up a job, anything, he must excel at it, everything must go well and in order. It’s obvious, and possibly obnoxious. He seizes most books with a zealous fervor, with a sort of necessity with the need to do well in each subject.

Ernie acts occasionally dense while at school. Some rare times, it's to not make others uncomfortable or to be unkind or reactionary. But Ernie is optimistic, and having been raised with extremely righteous and justice-minded people, he is a little naive. He values the rules and is as loyal to them as he is to his friends. He sometimes finds it very hard to comprehend people breaking them or acting unfaily and getting away unpunished. His optimism has made him naive. He is very confident in himself and what he does, and would often find it difficult to imagine people would not want to hear and know what he had to. Generally, he’s likeable, a genuinely nice individual if a bit pompous – but it’s who he is, and most of the time he isn’t even aware that he is acting pompous. He is desperately loyal to those whom he befriends, and if ever a friend was insulted or in danger, pity the threat.

Ernie has a low self-image. As much as he moves with utter confidence and speaks with assurance, privately, he struggles against a small inclination to think less of himself. After all, /everyone/ is so worked up about appearance and how important they are, and for so long, he was fat and still is a bit. It was this humiliation (and annoyance at feeling this), perfectionist side unable to bear it, that contributed to his take up physical activity and regulating what he ate. He worries more often than he would ever admit, it leaves lines over his face.
